Service Learning
Course Description:
This course gives students opportunity to deepen their knowledge of Japanese language and culture through their community service and to develop communication skills through discussions, reflection essays and presentations.
Reflective Narrative:
Through this class we were able to practice a variety of personal skills and lessons plans in order to teach students the Japanese culture. In Service Learning, along with a group of classmates we were assigned a class of first and second grade students. These students at times challenged our patience, our knowledge of Japan and our ability to teach with various distractions.
During class time we practiced our lessons plans so that they could be effective when we attend our site of service. Along with discussions of what service is and what it means to serve versus help the community. This discussion we had in class made me realize that service learning is not about helping those that need our help but working alongside programs that also believe in the ideas that we believe in as well.
Through class discussions and site practices I was able to develop a deep sense responsibility towards my community and peers. This class taught being willing to take on the responsibility as a mentor can really have an impact on those you guide and yourself. I feel that I was able to push the students I worked with to think about higher education and the possibilities that are out there.
