MLO 3: Secondary CUlture
3.1 Students describe concepts of culture and use that understanding in their comparison of the target culture with the second culture.
3.2 Students will analyze and make connections among the ways of thinking and perspectives, behavioral practices and cultural products of a second culture.
Courses that will be taken:
SPAN 308: Hist/Cultr Aztlan:SW US
SPAN 310: Hispanic Child Lit
I believe that taking a second language course can give students the basis in being culturally sensitive to those people around them. Aside from learning about a culture practicing those cultures ideas and methods will reinforce the knowledge that they have attained.
3.1 By taking these courses having knowledge of the Japanese culture, we can better understand why other cultures act differently. If I were to take SPAN 308 I will be able to understand the story of the indigenous people of the southwestern United States and how they were of an influence to the next generations. Not only then but this course also covers other areas of the Southwestern United states Region; by studying eras such as the Spanish colonial period, and the Mexican period a better understanding of the foundations of the Spanish culture can be understood. Being able to compare another culture to Japanese culture aside the American culture will show me just how influential cultures can be to each other.
3.2 I believe this course will satisfy MLO 3 section 3.2 because it not only exposes students to cultural aspect but will also practice their knowledge of the Spanish culture by writing, and drawing various works that represent elements of Hispanic children literature. I feel that by working in with these types of areas we can see different aspects of the culture being shown in creative forms, this can be compare to the Japanese culture because in the Japanese culture much of its beauty also comes from its art, whether it be Haiku (poems) or paintings. This type of connection can also be seen within other cultures that find art and expressions an important area of their identities.
